Abstract:

Background: The phenomenon of marital infidelity is a painful experience for the other party, which can make a person suffer psychologically. A review of research shows that women affected by infidelity have problems in terms of marital loneliness, emotional Divorce, Alexithymia, and psychological capital and need special attention for psychological interventions. Aims: The present study was conducted with the aim of determining the effectiveness of emotion-focoused therapy on marital loneliness, emotional Divorce, Alexithymia, and psychological capital in women affected by infidelity. Methods: The research method was semi-experimental with a pre-test and post-test design with a control group and a follow-up test period. Among the women affected by marital infidelity in Tehran in 2022, 30 people were selected as available research samples according to the inclusion criteria and randomly replaced in two experimental and control groups. The tools used in this research included marital burnout questionnaires (Pines, 1996), emotional Divorce (Gutman, 2001), Alexithymia (Begby et al., 1994) and psychological capital (Luthans et al., 2007). Data were analyzed with SPSS 23 software and analysis of variance with repeated measures. Results: The findings showed that there was a significant difference between the mean of the pre-test and the follow-up test of the experimental and control groups in terms of marital Burnout, Emotional Divorce, Alexithymia, and psychological capital. In other words, EFT reduced marital Burnout, Emotional Divorce, Alexithymia, and increased the psychological capital of women affected by marital infidelity (p<0.001). Conclusion: Based on the findings, it can be concluded that emotional therapy is effective in improving marital boredom, emotional Divorce, Alexithymia, and psychological capital, and this therapy can be used to improve the psychological status of women affected by marital infidelity.

Abstract:

Introduction: The problem of marital infidelity has become a common occurrence in today's societies, and it is necessary to use effective interventions to control these disturbances. The aim of the study was to determine the effectiveness of emotional therapy on emotion regulation, Marital Despondency and sexual intimacy of women affected by marital infidelity. Materials and Methods: The semi-experimental research method was of pre-test-post-test type with an intervention group and a control group. The statistical population of the research included 130 women who referred to Tabriz Metacognitive Counseling Center due to the betrayal of their husbands between September 1400 and September 1402. With the available sampling method, women who have higher scores in the questionnaire of marital despondency (cut point = score 73) and difficulty in emotional regulation (cut point = score 90) and lower scores in the questionnaire of sexual intimacy (cut point = score 75). 30 people were selected and randomly, 15 people were replaced in the intervention group and 15 people in the control group. The intervention group received emotional therapy for 9 sessions and the control group did not receive any intervention. Data were analyzed using multivariate analysis of covariance. Results: Emotion-oriented therapy reduces the difficulty in regulating emotions (F=10.669, P<0.001), Marital Despondency (F=82.213, P<0.001) and increases sexual intimacy (F=102.713, P<0.001) was effective for women affected by marital infidelity. Conclusion: The use of interventions based on emotional therapy can lead to an increase in self-regulation of emotions and sexual intimacy and a decrease in Marital Despondency in women affected by marital infidelity.

Abstract:

Introduction: Infidelity as one of the main causes for divorce has very deleterious effects on family, mental health, and feelings of the victims. The purpose of this study was to identify and explain emotional experiences and reactions of women victims of infidelity.Method: In this interpretative study with phenomenology method, study population consisted of women victims of infidelity in Shemiranat, Tehran City, Iran, in 2016.18 women of 22-64 years who were victims of the infidelity were selected through purposive sampling and were investigated by a semistructured interview. The data were analyzed using a thematic analysis method. Results: The data analysis resulted in two main themes, 12 subthemes, and 61 initial concepts. As the first theme, ‘maladaptive emotional reactions’ consisted of subthemes as the feelings of separation from life (including feelings of sadness, frustration, and desire for death), separation from oneself (including inadequacy, and sense of abandonment), anger, hatred, cruelty, vulnerability, emotional confusion, fear and anxiety, numbness, and coldness. The second main theme was‘adaptive emotional reactions’consisting of subthemes as feelings of self-worth (including one’s own and spouse), compassion (including toward the spouse, and toward the rival), and attachment to the spouse (interest in the spouse, sense of their ownership, and their forgiveness). Conclusion: The results showed that infidelity was a phenomenon not experienced similarly by all women victims. Based on social constructivists, different perceptions of women victims causing different patterns of reactions to infidelity in them. Given the fact that the findings have been elicited out of a native study, they may play a vital role in developing the intervention packages.

Abstract:

Background: Research evidence shows that various factors are relevant in the propensity to engage in marital infidelity. On the one hand, self-compassion and emotional maturity are two key variables in marital relationships and couples' lives. Researchers have neglected the role of these variables as a model, and have not determined the effect of self-compassion on the propensity to engage in marital infidelity through the mediation of emotional maturity. Aims: This research as a structural model explains the marital infidelity based on self-compassion with the mediating role of emotional maturity. Method: The current research is descriptive and correlational and of structural equations type. Its statistical population consisted of all married women who referred towel-being centers in Behshahr, Iran during the three months of December, January and February (2021). From among them, we selected 385 people by non-random sampling method. All participants completed the Marital Infidelity Propensity Questionnaires of Drigotas et al. (1999), Neff's Self-Compassion (2003), and Singh and Bhargava's Emotional Maturity Scale (1990). We used Pearson correlation and structural equation model for data analysis. Results: The results showed that there is a negative and significant relationship between self-compassion and emotional maturity on the one hand and the propensity to engage in marital infidelity on the other (P<0.01). According to the results, emotional maturity (-0.382) and self-compassion (-0.368) have a direct and significant effect on the propensity to engage in marital infidelity (P<0.01). Self-compassion had an indirect and significant effect (-0.185) on the propensity to engage in marital infidelity through the mediation of emotional maturity. Conclusion: Therefore, we can say that the structural model of explaining the propensity to engage in marital infidelity based on self-compassion with the mediator role of emotional maturity has a favorable fitting and the relationships and effects between the variables are significant. Accordingly, the use of these variables in the framework of a structural model can help counselors, psychologists, therapists, social science researchers, and other professionals.
